THE PADDINGTON WALKING TOUR
A TWISTED TRUE CRIME & HISTORY ADVENTURE
A TWISTED TRUE CRIME & HISTORY ADVENTURE
The history of Paddington is filled with sensational stories, colourful characters and iconic Victorian architecture. Its rapid growth during the second half of the 19th century laid out its vast network of terrace-lined streets and fashionable corner pubs. But its dramatic fall from grace at the turn of the 20th saw the suburb become synonymous with slum-life and criminal activity in Sydney.
Luckily, and not without a fight, Paddington’s picturesque streetscapes have not only survived and but thrived — allowing our historical journey to reflect on everything this prized pocket of Sydney has witnessed and retains within its walls.

Join a professional guide and local historian on walking route riddled with intrigue and insights as we bring Paddington’s past to life on this unique small group tour.
Drawing on historic police and court records, news stories and rare archival imagery we’ll dig beneath Paddington’s modern charms to unveil the stories behind shocking historical headlines such as:
…and many, many more.
Over 2.5 hours we’ll cross the length of this dense urban district — wandering down Paddington’s back lanes and infamous streets to uncover its secrets on foot.

Once a place of silent streams, rocky groves and important walking tracks forged by Sydney’s ancient Indigenous peoples, Paddington began its colonial life more than two hundred years ago in the form of Australia’s first legal distillery: producing rum and gin. By the 1850s it boasted a small village known for its windmills, taverns and proximity to the new Victoria Military Barracks.
Fast forward only a few decades to the 1890s and the Paddington Council claimed it possessed more rate paying houses than any other suburb in Australia. Its sandstone banks had been carved into a labyrinth of laneways, decorative terraces and bustling pubs. Steam powered trams shared the streets with private carriages transporting wealthy residents on their daily ‘commute’ to the city. While at the same time an army of industrious quarrymen, carpenters, bricklayers and stonemasons busied themselves on every block.

…and then, the CRASH! Paddington suddenly experienced an exodus of the well-to-do residents who had adorned their homes with marble mantle pieces and cedar staircases. Struggling tenants and boarding took over — beginning an era plagued with poverty, push gangs, sly-grog shops, cat burglars, brothels, bashings and shocking murder stories
By 1920 a Sydney health inspector would report that Paddington’s streets were the “worst place to live I have ever seen” and that the hopelessly poor tenants who inhabited the neighbourhood’s “disgusting slums” should “shoot their landlords” as they would “be better off in gaol than in these places”.

Our tours last approximately 2.5 hours, covering around 3 km (1.8 miles). We move at an easy-going pace and stop at approximately 15-20 historic sites for storytelling. However, due to the layout of Paddington, some uneven surfaces, staircases, and laneways are part of the route.
Unfortunately, the layout of Paddington and the inclusion of stairs, hills, and narrow laneways make the tour inaccessible for prams or wheelchairs.
Your guide, will be at the meeting point 10-15 minutes before the tour begins. They will be wearing a blue Journey Walks shirt and carrying a white tour folder. We recommend arriving at least 5 minutes early to check in so we can start the tour on time.
If you’re running late, please call or text your guide at +61 421 269 240. If you’re more than 5-10 minutes late, we may need to start without you, and it might be difficult to contact us once the tour is underway. In this case, we’ll do our best to reschedule your booking, but we don’t offer refunds on the missed tour.
Due to the adult content, as well as the 2.5 hours of walking and in-depth history discussions, this tour is not recommended for children under 14. However, we encourage parental discretion for any exceptions.
We generally limit our small group tours to a maximum of 14 adults. If you’d like to bring younger guests, please contact us to confirm availability.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander guests are advised that this tour may include the names and images of deceased individuals.
