Join a passionate history guide on an exploration of Millers Point and discover the many faces of this murky maritime village through the ages.
As we roam the cobbled alleys, timber wharves and spectacular look-outs of this notorious neighbourhood, we’ll unpack the forgotten lives of its local scallywags, sailors, larrikins and legends. Our quest will animate the tales of colourful convicts such as Jack “The Miller” Leighton — whose untimely death in 1826 reminds us that windmill-maintenance and heavy drinking are not a great match, and ‘merchant princes’ such as Captain Towns — whose excavated trove of long lost trade-goods offers a window into the treasures of Pacific shipping.
Best of all, our exploration will reveal the fascinating lives of two of the area’s longest standing residents — The Lord Nelson Hotel & Brewery (1842) and The Hero of Waterloo Hotel (1843). These iconic drinking-wells are relics of another age whose sandstone walls are layered thick with the scars and secrets of all they’ve seen. Included in our visit to both of these historic Pubs will be a delicious glass of craft Beer — ensuring we truly savour the flavour of their history and get a chance to uncover their what lies within.
